LBJ’s Election Night in Austin

Jake remembers a “night of nights” in Austin, as he is part of an entourage accompanying the victorious Lyndon Johnson to greet an enormous crowd filling Congress Avenue the evening of the Presidential election of November 3, 1964.

Peggy Pickle:

Daddy says that, “My wife accused me of abandoning her…..”   No kidding!   Daddy got so excited by the crowds, commotion and proximity to Lyndon Johnson that he forgot Beryl in the surging crowd, jumped on the stage and left her.  Beryl wasn’t one to panic, but she was annoyed.  I don’t think Daddy came back for a good long while, during which time Beryl had to maintain her balance and not get trampled.  So much for the wife sharing the glory.  If you waited for Jake to hold your arm and escort you, you could grow old waiting.
